How to Clean a Bathroom Properly in Dhaka (Hard Water, Scale and All)

Most people clean a bathroom in the wrong order, scrub the one thing that cannot be scrubbed off, and skip the four places that actually smell. None of that is your fault — bathroom cleaning in Dhaka is genuinely harder than it looks, because our water works against you.

Why Dhaka bathrooms are different

WASA supply is hard water. Every time a drop dries on a tap, tile or glass panel, it leaves the minerals behind. That white-grey film on your shower screen is limescale, and no amount of scrubbing with detergent removes it — detergent is not acidic, and scale only dissolves in acid. Scrub harder and all you do is scratch the chrome so the next layer sticks faster.

Add the second Dhaka factor — humidity that rarely drops below 70% for months — and you have grout that grows black mould between one clean and the next.

The right order (this matters more than the products)

Clean top to bottom, dry to wet. Doing it in the wrong order means cleaning the floor twice.

1. Clear everything out — buckets, mugs, bottles, mats. You cannot clean around objects.
2. Dry-dust first — exhaust fan grille, light fitting, the top of the door frame, window ledges. Do this before anything is wet, or dust turns to mud.
3. Apply the products and walk away — descaler on taps, shower and glass; toilet cleaner inside the bowl; degreaser on the basin. Give them 10 minutes. Contact time does the work, not your arm.
4. Agitate — soft brush on grout, non-scratch pad on tiles, old toothbrush around tap bases.
5. Rinse from the top down — walls, then fixtures, then floor.
6. Dry the metal and glass — a squeegee and a dry cloth. This single step is what keeps it looking clean for a fortnight instead of a day.

What actually works on limescale

An acid. That is the whole secret.

• White vinegar — cheap, safe, slow. Soak a cloth, wrap it around the tap, leave 30 minutes.
• Lemon — works on light film, smells better, not strong enough for old buildup.
• A proper bathroom descaler — what we use. Fast, and formulated not to strip chrome.

Never mix bleach with any acid or with toilet cleaner. It releases chlorine gas. In a small Dhaka bathroom with the door shut, that is genuinely dangerous — people are hospitalised for this every year. One product at a time, rinse in between, keep the door open.

Natural stone is the exception

If your bathroom has marble or any natural stone, acid will etch it permanently — dull white marks you cannot polish out at home. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner instead. If you are not sure what your floor is, test in a corner behind the door first.

The four spots almost everybody misses

• Under the toilet rim — the hooked jets where the water comes out. This is usually the smell.
• The toilet base and its screw caps — where splash collects and dries.
• The floor drain — lift the grate. Hair and soap form a plug that holds standing water, and standing water in Dhaka means mosquitoes.
• The exhaust fan — a clogged fan cannot pull humidity out, which is exactly why the mould keeps coming back.

The black grout problem

If mould returns within a week of cleaning, the grout has failed — it is porous and the growth is below the surface. Bleach whitens the top and it comes straight back. The real fix is to have the grout cleaned properly with a machine, then resealed. That is deep cleaning work, not weekly cleaning work.

A realistic routine

• Every day, 60 seconds — squeegee the glass, wipe the basin dry.
• Weekly, 20 minutes — toilet, basin, floor, mirror.
• Monthly, 45 minutes — descale everything, brush the grout, clear the drain, wash the exhaust grille.
• Twice a year — a professional bathroom cleaning service to reset the scale and grout before it becomes permanent.
