Dengue Prevention Cleaning Checklist for Dhaka Homes (2026

Dengue Season 2026: The Home Cleaning Checklist Every Dhaka Family Needs Right Now

If it feels like everyone you know has a relative in hospital with dengue this month, you're not imagining it. According to DGHS figures reported on 28 September, 233 people have died of dengue in Bangladesh so far in 2026 — 136 of them in September alone — and more than 75,700 patients have been hospitalised this year. Doctors expect the outbreak to stay high into early October.

The government has launched a three-month Dengue Prevention and Cleanliness Campaign, asking every home, school and office to spend at least one hour a week cleaning their surroundings and removing stagnant water. Dhaka's district administration has said the same thing plainly: the fight against dengue starts at home.

The good news? The Aedes mosquito is a home-grown problem. It breeds in clean, still water — often just a bottle cap's worth — inside and around our own homes. That means a proper cleaning routine is one of the most effective things your family can do.

Here is the checklist our Dhaka Clean team uses on every dengue-season job. Save it, share it, and use it this week.

Why cleaning matters so much for dengue

  • Aedes eggs can survive for months on dry container walls and hatch as soon as water returns.
  • A container with water can go from egg to adult mosquito in about 7–10 days.
  • So the rule is simple: find standing water, empty it, scrub the container, and repeat every week. Just tipping out water is not enough — the eggs stick to the sides.

The room-by-room dengue cleaning checklist

1. Rooftop (the #1 hotspot in Dhaka)

  • Clear blocked roof drains and gutters so rainwater doesn't pool.
  • Remove or turn upside down old tyres, buckets, broken pots, paint tins and plastic sheets.
  • Cover water tanks tightly; check the lid seals.
  • Rooftop gardens: empty and scrub plant saucers, and fill tray bottoms with sand.

2. Balcony & verandah

  • Empty flowerpot trays every 2–3 days and scrub them.
  • Check AC drip water — it often collects in a bucket or a hidden corner.
  • Store unused items indoors or covered; clutter hides water.

3. Kitchen

  • Clean under the fridge — the defrost tray is a classic breeding spot.
  • Don't leave water in drums, pots or bowls overnight; cover stored water.
  • Keep sink drains clear and dry.

4. Bathroom

  • Empty and scrub buckets and mugs; store them upside down.
  • Clean floor drains and keep the commode lid closed in rarely used bathrooms.
  • Check the cistern and any leaking pipes.

5. Indoors & bedrooms

  • Change water in flower vases and money plants every 2–3 days.
  • Look behind curtains, under beds and in dark corners — resting mosquitoes hide there.
  • Use window nets and mosquito nets, especially for children and the elderly, even during the day.

6. Around the building

  • Check the parking area, stairwells, construction material and the ground floor for puddles.
  • Talk to your building committee about a shared weekly cleaning day.

Your 10-minute weekly routine

Every Friday or Saturday, do a quick "water walk" with your family: rooftop → balcony → kitchen → bathroom → vases. Empty, scrub, cover, done. Kids can help — make it a game of "find the hidden water."

Important health reminder

Cleaning prevents mosquitoes — it does not treat dengue. If anyone at home has a high fever, severe headache, body pain, rash or vomiting, see a doctor and get tested quickly. Avoid painkillers other than paracetamol unless a doctor advises otherwise.

A clean home is a safe home. Let's beat dengue together — one bucket, one pot, one rooftop at a time.
