Dhaka's Dust Calendar: What to Clean in Which Month

Cleaning a Dhaka flat on a fixed monthly routine is a waste of money. The city's air changes completely between January and July, and so does what your home actually needs.

November to February — the dust months

Dry season, construction everywhere, and the worst air quality of the year. Dust is the enemy, and it comes in through window grills faster than you can wipe it.

• Vacuum and wipe weekly, not fortnightly — dust that sits turns greasy and stops wiping off.
• Clean window grills, tracks and sills monthly. This is where most of the dust enters.
• Wash curtains more often than feels necessary. They are the biggest dust filter in the flat.
• Book a deep clean before Eid — everyone else does too, so book early.

March to May — heat and pre-monsoon

• Best window for sofa and carpet cleaning — things dry in hours, not days.
• Get the water tank done before the heavy rain; refilling is easier and drying faster.
• Kitchen degreasing pays off now, before humidity makes the film stickier.

June to September — monsoon

Humidity, not dust, is the problem. Mould appears behind wardrobes, under sinks and along the bottom of bathroom walls.

• Check the back of wardrobes and under the sink monthly for the first grey speckling.
• Keep bathroom exhaust fans running and clean — they are usually clogged, which is why the mould keeps coming back.
• Do not book carpet cleaning in peak monsoon unless the company brings air movers; drying takes too long.
• Pest activity peaks. Cockroaches and mosquitoes both breed faster in standing water — check balcony drains and plant trays.

October — the reset

The single best month for a full deep clean. Monsoon damp is gone, the dust season has not started, and drying conditions are good. If you only deep clean once a year, do it now.

A simple rule

Dry season: fight dust — vacuum, grills, curtains. Wet season: fight damp — ventilation, mould checks, exhaust fans. Two deep cleans a year, timed for October and before Eid, cover most of what is left.
