Moving Into a New Flat in Dhaka? The 11-Point Handover Clean

A newly handed-over flat in Dhaka is not clean, it is finished. Those are different things. Cement haze, grout dust and paint spots are still on every surface, and a mop moves them around rather than removing them.

Do this before the furniture arrives. Everything below is cheaper, faster and better done in an empty flat.

The 11 points

1. Cement haze on floor tiles. A thin grey film that dulls the whole floor. Needs an acidic wash, not detergent.
2. Grout lines. Construction dust settles in them permanently if it is sealed in by the first mopping.
3. Paint spots on floors, switches, handles and glass — scraped off carefully, not scrubbed.
4. Window tracks and grills. Full of building dust. Miss these and every breeze re-dusts your new flat.
5. Inside every cabinet and wardrobe, including the top shelves nobody checks.
6. Bathroom fittings — protective film, adhesive residue and cement splash on the commode and basin.
7. Kitchen counters and sink, including under the sink where offcuts and dust collect.
8. Door frames and the tops of doors. The single most-skipped surface in any flat.
9. Ceiling fans, lights and switchboards, before anyone turns a fan on and redistributes it all.
10. Balcony and drains — construction debris blocks them and you find out during the first heavy rain.
11. The water tank, if the building has just been completed. This one matters most and gets checked least.

Three things that cost more if you skip them

Grout. Once construction dust is sealed into fresh grout, no amount of later cleaning fully recovers it. Re-grouting an entire flat costs many times a deep clean.

Drains. Cement debris that sets inside a balcony or bathroom drain becomes a plumbing job, not a cleaning one.

The tank. Builders leave sand, plaster and sometimes packaging inside water tanks. It is silently drunk by everyone in the flat until someone looks.

What it takes

A proper handover clean on a 3-bedroom flat runs 6-10 hours with a full crew and machines. Booked with the furniture already in, it takes longer and costs more, and some of it can no longer be done at all.
