Bed Bugs in Dhaka: Why One Spray Never Works

Bed bugs are the most over-promised pest problem in Dhaka. Someone sprays, the bugs disappear for ten days, and everyone declares victory — until the bites come back and the money is gone.

Why the second visit is not an upsell

Insecticide kills adults and nymphs. It does not reliably kill eggs, and a single female lays several eggs a day, tucked into mattress seams and the joints of a wooden bed. Those eggs hatch in roughly 7 to 14 days.

So a single treatment, however good, clears the living population and leaves the next generation intact. The follow-up visit at day 14 exists to kill what hatched. Skip it and you restart the cycle.

Where they actually live

Not in your bedsheets. Check, in order:

• Mattress seams and the piping along the edge
• Joints and screw holes of a wooden bed frame
• Behind the headboard and the wall paint behind it
• Sofa seams in the room where someone naps
• Cracks in the wall and the edge of the skirting

Small dark spots along a mattress seam are droppings. That, not a sighting, is the usual first evidence.

What you should do before the technician arrives

• Wash all bedding at the highest temperature the fabric allows and dry it fully.
• Do not move the mattress to another room — that is how one infested room becomes two.
• Do not spray shop-bought insecticide first. It scatters them deeper into cracks and makes professional treatment harder.
• Pull the bed away from the wall so the technician can reach the frame and skirting.

What honest treatment looks like

Inspection first, then treatment of seams, joints, cracks and skirting — not a general room spray. A written warranty. A scheduled second visit at day 14, included in the price. And a clear answer about whether adjoining flats need checking, because in an apartment building bed bugs travel.

If a company quotes one visit and a guarantee in the same sentence, ask them what happens to the eggs.
