Sofa and Mattress Cleaning: What You Can Do at Home and What You Cannot

Sofa and Mattress Cleaning: What You Can Do at Home and What You Cannot

Upholstery is the most expensive soft thing in most Dhaka homes and the least often cleaned. A sofa absorbs body oil, food, dust and — in this climate — moisture. A mattress does the same for a third of your life. Here is what sofa cleaning and mattress cleaning you can genuinely do yourself, and where the line is.

Read the label before you touch it

Almost all upholstery carries a cleaning code, usually on a tag under a cushion:

  • W — water-based cleaner is safe.
  • S — solvent only. Water will leave a permanent ring.
  • WS — either works.
  • X — vacuum only. No liquid at all.

If there is no tag, test on the back or underneath, where nobody looks. This one habit prevents most of the ruined sofas we are called to look at.

Spills: the first two minutes decide everything

  1. Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain into the padding and breaks the fibre surface. Press straight down with a dry white cloth and lift.
  2. White cloth only — a coloured towel transfers its own dye into wet fabric.
  3. Work from the outside in so the stain does not spread.
  4. Do not use hot water on protein spills — milk, egg, blood. Heat cooks them into the fibre. Cold water only.
  5. Dry fast. A fan on the damp patch. In Dhaka's humidity, slow drying is how you get a musty smell that is worse than the original stain.

Weekly maintenance that actually matters

Vacuum with the upholstery attachment, including under and behind the cushions. In a city this dusty, vacuuming does more for a sofa than any product. Rotate and flip the cushions so one seat does not collapse before the others.

Keep upholstery out of direct sunlight — Dhaka sun fades fabric fast, and faded fabric cannot be restored by cleaning.

Mattresses: the one people forget

You sweat about a third of a litre a night. In a humid climate that goes straight into the mattress, and a warm damp mattress is exactly what dust mites want — the usual trigger behind morning sneezing, itchy eyes and a child's asthma that is worse at night.

  • Strip and vacuum the whole surface monthly, seams included.
  • Baking soda sprinkled on, left an hour, then vacuumed off, pulls out odour and some moisture.
  • Air it. Pull the mattress off the bed and stand it up near an open window for a few hours when you can.
  • Use a washable protector. Far easier to wash a protector than to clean a mattress.
  • Never soak a mattress. It will not dry through, and what grows inside is worse than what you were trying to remove.

Where home methods stop

You cannot extract what has soaked into the foam with a cloth. Once a spill has gone through the fabric — or once the whole sofa has years of body oil in it — the only thing that removes it is hot-water extraction: cleaning solution injected under pressure and pulled straight back out with the dirt, in one pass.

That is also the honest answer on smells. A deodoriser covers an odour for a week. Extraction removes what is causing it.

Signs it is time: the arms and headrest look darker than the rest, it smells when the room is shut up, anyone in the house has worsening allergies, or a pet has had an accident on it.

What professional cleaning involves

Our sofa and carpet cleaning service is done at your home and priced per seat, from ৳800. We vacuum deeply, pre-treat the stains individually, extract with hot water, and leave it damp rather than wet — dry in four to six hours with a fan on. Mattresses and carpets are cleaned the same way.

A tip worth money: do it in the morning, and on a dry day if you can. Extraction plus monsoon humidity plus a closed flat is a slow dry.
